PROSPECT.2 NEW ORLEANS
Second New Orleans International Contemporary Art Biennial
EXHIBITION
Prospect.2 will present the work of
62 artists selected from more than
20 countries and from diverse cultural, generational and artistic backgrounds. Each artist in the exhibition will be provided with a dedicated space or venue located in sites throughout the New Orleans metropolitan area. Many of the world’s most promising and/or recognized artists have been invited to develop major new projects to be premiered in New Orleans during the biennial.
Prospect.2 New Orleans will take place at 20 venues in 7 neighborhoods. Venues include major cultural institutions, as well as smaller institutions, municipal spaces and other sites in neighborhoods that the conventional tourist routes usually overlook, such as Central City and Treme. U.S. Biennial staff works closely with artists and venues to create meaningful relationships between the site and the artworks that are installed in each location, allowing artists to be inspired by the unique history, architecture, and culture of New Orleans.
EDUCATION PROGRAM
Prospect.2 will present artworks that grapple with historical themes, question what it means to live in a global society, explore issues of identity, and impart experiences of beauty, providing an exceptionally fertile ground to create learning experiences and to stimulate creativity among students of all ages. An extensive education program developed in conjunction with Prospect.2 will offer teacher training sessions, field trips, student exhibitions, and an artist in residency program in collaboration with schools and other community partners. Programs will target a diverse range of public and private schools and will include both Recovery District and charter schools.
IMPACT
New Orleans was the first U.S city to host a recurring international art exhibition, beginning in 1887 with the Exhibition of the Art Association of New Orleans. In this tradition, Prospect New Orleans features art originating from New Orleans and Louisiana within an international context and provides the Louisiana public with new art conceived and developed for the city. Prospect.2 will continue the development of a new category of cultural tourism on a scale normally seen during Mardi Gras and the city’s celebrated JazzFest. This influx of international tourists provides an enormous boost for the local economy, including hotels, restaurants, shopkeepers, gallery owners, and artists themselves.
