Arts Council New Orleans & Young Artist Movement with Carl Joe Williams
Unity and Harmony
In collaboration with the Arts Council New Orleans and under the mentorship of acclaimed local artist Carl Joe Williams, the Young Artist Movement students from The NET Charter High School will be creating sculptures that explore New Orleans' complex and difficult relationship with water and the city's shift to green infrastructure.
Unity commemorates the stories of residents that experienced devastating loss due to Hurricane Katrina and continue to face stormwater and other environmental risks. Harmony explores the theme of environmental resilience through patterns and imagery related to the flow of water. The sculptures also represent an inhibitor to the healthy flow of water: plastic waste. The sculptures will incorporate aluminum casts that reflect back on the viewer their role in living harmoniously with their environment.
The Arts Council New Orleans is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting arts and culture in the city. Its mission is to improve quality of life in New Orleans by supporting, activating, and investing in our city’s greatest natural resource: our artists, cultural producers, and creative community.
The Arts Council’s Young Artist Movement (YAM) program is an arts education and workforce development program that beautifies neighborhoods and connects youth to their communities through the research, design, and installation of public art.
Carl Joe Williams is a New Orleans-based artist whose paintings, installations and sculptures incorporate complex color combinations, rhythmic patterns, and found objects to address the physiological and historical concerns of everyday people.
