Prospect in Atlanta
Last month, Prospect headed to Atlanta to celebrate the exceptional talent of Prospect.6 Co-Artistic Director Ebony G. Patterson as she received the prestigious Driskell Prize at the High Museum of Art.
Since its establishment in 2005, the Driskell Prize has become a symbol of the High Museum's unwavering commitment to fostering innovation in the arts and advancing research on African American artists and scholars. This year, the prize rightly celebrates the remarkable contributions of Ebony G. Patterson, whose awe-inspiring work stands as a poignant tribute to marginalized communities worldwide. Patterson's creations resonate profoundly, compelling viewers to confront the stark realities of social and racial inequality across the globe. Through her striking artistry, she poses thought-provoking questions that encourage us all to reflect on our shared humanity.
"We are honored to recognize her transformative practice and significant impact on African American art with the esteemed 2023 Driskell Prize."
— Rand Suffolk, Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr., Director of the High
On the occasion of the 18th Annual David C. Driskell Prize Gala, held on April 28, Prospect had the pleasure of gathering alongside friends, family, and esteemed guests, including Susan Brennan Co-Artistic Director Miranda Lash and Prospect.5 artist Cosmo Whyte. We were also delighted to reconnect with Franklin Sirmans, Artistic Director of Prospect.3, in which Patterson was a participating artist.
Venturing deeper into Atlanta's vibrant art scene, Prospect stopped by the UTA Artist Space, currently under the stewardship of Prospect board member Arthur Lewis. Serving as a sister space to its Los Angeles counterpart, this venue provides a dynamic platform for both established and emerging artists, showcasing visionary exhibitions that push boundaries and challenge conventional norms.
One of their recent exhibitions, "The Eyes Were All On Us," centered on the work of Lonnie Holley, a distinguished artist previously featured in Prospect.3. Born in Alabama, Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity. His art and music, born out of struggle, hardship, but perhaps more importantly, out of furious curiosity and biological necessity, have manifested themselves in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance and sound.
UTA Artist Space acts as a haven for creators seeking to make a profound cultural impact and holds the work of many artists who we have had the pleasure of working with in past iterations of Prospect.
